World Environment Day, happening on the 5th June 2024, is an annual event organized by the UN. It’s a platform for promoting environmental advocacy and addressing pressing environmental issues, and each year it has an overarching theme. This year’s theme is land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.
Desertification affects over 36M square km of land globally, impacting millions of people who rely on these ecosystems for their livelihoods. Droughts have become more frequent and severe, threatening water security and food production.
We are the last generation who have the chance to regenerate and rewind the damage we have caused to the environment. And at The Oyster Restoration Company, we are already taking big steps to reduce land degradation and coastal erosion.
We are aiming to restore 150M European native flat oysters to Europe’s coastlines each year. Oyster reefs act as natural barriers, reducing the impact of waves and preventing coastal erosion. In short, they prevent further damage and protect vulnerable coastlines.
These 150M oysters will also be able to filter 36B liters of water per day, and they will forever increase fish biomass by up to 500T per square km per year across 30 square km.
This World Environment Day, let’s recognize the urgency of addressing land degradation, desertification, and drought resilience. We all have a role to play in healing our planet. By supporting and participating in restoration efforts, advocating for sustainable practices, and raising awareness, we can help ensure a sustainable and thriving environment for future generations.
